my host family said
I have to pay 25 bucks to activate it and 10 bucks per month
Theirs are Verizon Wireless; Family plan
and I heard that this network's cell
cannot be used in Thailand
because there's no place for simcard

I want to know if it's too expensive or not
Is it neccessary for an exchange student to have a cell phone?

Is the family plan including free texting?

I know nothing about cell phone here
Please give me advice duay ka thanks :)

Verizon is CDMA, different from GSM system we use in Thailand (only T-Mobile and AT&T provide GSM service)

The plan seems fine to me, not too expensive but not cheap either. If you want to go for it, that would be ok, but you can't bring it back to Thailand to use. (Even you use Hutch here in Thailand, with the same system CDMA but not compatible)

Cell phone becomes quite necessary these days because it helps host family contact exchange students in case of emergency. But it's not mandatory for host family to provide cell phone for AFS participants. You may buy it yourself, prepaid service is recommended.

Go back to previous comments I gave for tips and advice before buying a prepaid phone.

Well... please do not be in your own world, you need to ask...ask...ask, especially with your teachers. They understand that you are an exchange student and the ability of your English. Ask them after class about homework and tell them to explain to you clear and slow.

Find some friends who can be able to explain something to you nice and slow. I'm sure you can find some friends that are willing to help.

Usually it takes about 3-4 months in average for exchange students to realize that their English ability is getting better. It also depends on the background of English skill for each individual as well, some might go faster, some might go slower. It's ok.

Chase is a decent bank. I never opened my bank account in the US but if you want to do so, your host parents may know what to do. Go for it, because you won't need to pay ATM withdrawal fee if you get cash from any Chase ATM machines.

There are couple of choices of banks that have branches in Thailand that you might be considered, including HSBC and CityBank. Just in case your parents would like to transfer money to you. Anyway, you can take some money from your Thai debit card to your American bank account as well. Don't forget to get a debit card from the bank you open the account there as well.

this is not fun, now you have to find it. If you lost it, you have to call back to your bank in Thailand to freeze it (อายัต) before someone found your card and use it.

Since you're not 18, I think you may have to bring your host parents with you to be the authorized person to open the bank account. Otherwise, you may try another bank. Maybe CITI or HSBC
